From a pure talent standpoint, Ekeler is still useful because he has long been one of the better pass-catching backs in football, but the injury history matters a lot now. Recent outlooks note that he may no longer be a passing-game focal point and that he could be more of a depth or fill-in option than an every-week centerpiece, especially if a team uses him in a smaller, specialized role.

The team context is still important, too. The most recent player previews describe him as part of Washington’s backfield after the Commanders moved Brian Robinson Jr., but they also point to rookie Jac Croskey-Merritt as a possible lead option, which would cap Ekeler’s early-down work and leave him competing for touches.
