Chigoziem Okonkwo enters the 2026 fantasy season as one of the more interesting late-round tight end darts. The biggest reason for optimism is his new situation in Washington, where he’s being projected as the Commanders’ second pass-catching option behind Terry McLaurin and could benefit from improved quarterback play with Jayden Daniels under center.

The role is what makes him appealing, because Washington’s depth chart behind McLaurin looks unsettled and there isn’t a proven, dominant tight end target hog in place after Zach Ertz departed. Several current 2026 outlooks see a path to meaningful volume, with projections ranging around the TE2/TE3 border and stat lines that point to streamer value if the usage holds.

That said, the caution flag is still real. Okonkwo has not yet shown the kind of target share or touchdown production that usually signals a true fantasy breakout, and multiple evaluators still view him more as a matchup-based starter than someone to lock into lineups every week. His 2026 projection on FantasyPros sits at 52.8 catches, 569.8 yards, and 2.8 touchdowns, which is useful but not exactly league-winning production.

For fantasy managers, the best way to view Okonkwo is as a strong late-round TE2 with upside rather than a safe every-week starter. If Washington’s passing game takes a step forward and he settles in as the clear No. 2 target, he could outplay his draft cost and become one of the better tight end values in 2026.
