Christian McCaffrey enters the 2026 fantasy season as one of the safest elite bets in football, but not without real risk attached. CBS Sports still has him as a top-five fantasy running back and a mid-to-late first-round pick, yet also flags his age-30 season and his massive 2025 workload as legitimate warning signs.

The upside is still enormous because his 2025 production was absurd: he was the No. 1 non-quarterback in PPR points per game, piled up 311 carries, 102 catches, and 17 total touchdowns, and finished as the overall RB1 in fantasy scoring. FantasyData also notes that even with a possible slight reduction in touches, he still has clear RB1 overall upside if he stays healthy.

The concern is durability and wear. McCaffrey had a career-high 413 touches in the regular season and 450 total touches including the playoffs, and several recent evaluations point to that workload, his age, and his history of injuries as reasons to be cautious. FantasyIndex noted in January 2026 that he had already lost a little explosiveness as a runner, even though his receiving value remained elite.

For 2026 drafts, the best approach is to treat McCaffrey as a high-end first-round cornerstone, but not a set-it-and-forget-it lock to repeat as RB1 overall. He is still tied to San Francisco and remains a foundational piece of that offense, with no indication from the sources provided of a trade, release, or team change affecting his outlook. If you draft him, pairing him with a strong handcuff is a smart way to protect the pick, because the ceiling is league-winning while the floor is higher-risk than the very top backs usually are.
