WR

Deebo Samuel

Washington Commanders

Season Preview

Deebo Samuel enters the 2025 fantasy football season with a fresh start on the Washington Commanders after being traded from the San Francisco 49ers. Despite a difficult 2024 season plagued by multiple injuries—including a calf strain, pneumonia, a hamstring strain, and rib issues—Samuel still brings significant upside due to his unique playmaking ability as a versatile wide receiver who can also contribute on the ground. His bruising, tackle-breaking style remains a valuable asset in an offense that heavily utilizes screen passes, an area where Washington ranked sixth last year. Expect Samuel to slot in as the Commanders' WR2, providing an intriguing mix of receiving and rushing chances for Jayden Daniels’ passing attack.

The 2024 campaign was a disappointment for Samuel, who looked noticeably slower and less explosive than in previous years. He registered only seven receptions of 25+ yards compared to six receptions of 40+ yards with three touchdowns two seasons ago. His rushing efficiency dropped as well, with just 136 yards on 42 carries and a single touchdown, a far cry from his prior big-play production. These metrics suggest some decline, possibly linked to lingering effects from pneumonia and the series of injuries that sapped his explosiveness throughout last season. Thus, Samuel’s fantasy value currently sits in the WR4 tier with more appeal in PPR (points per reception) formats rather than as a consistent WR1.

Given his injury history and the toll of a physical playing style, Samuel carries a notable risk entering 2025, especially as he is now a year older. However, if he can stay healthy, Samuel has the talent to rebound and hit around 1,000 combined yards with approximately 65 receptions and close to seven total touchdowns. That production level would place him roughly as a backend WR3, making him a potentially valuable mid-to-late round target in drafts. Notably, if the Commanders trade fellow wideout Terry McLaurin, Samuel’s target share and overall fantasy stock would rise sharply, increasing his appeal to fantasy managers.

In summary, fantasy football managers should approach Deebo Samuel as a high-upside but risky WR2. His early 2025 preseason and Washington’s offensive system offer a promising situation, but his recent injury saga and downward statistical trends warrant caution. Those willing to invest in Samuel late in drafts or as a depth piece could be rewarded if he regains his top-tier explosiveness and stays healthy. Otherwise, he might be a rotating option best used when matched up favorably or targeting PPR formats that value his receiving volume.
