Devon Achane

Miami Dolphins

Season Preview

De'Von Achane enters the 2025 fantasy football season with significant upside but also some risks that managers need to weigh carefully. Projected as a top-tier running back, he is ranked highly in PPR formats thanks to his impressive receiving ability. Last year, Achane finished as the fantasy RB1 in points per game when quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was healthy, largely because of his volume in the passing game—he caught 78 passes for 592 yards and six touchdowns. Many experts foresee him commanding around 294 touches, nearly 1,800 total yards, and over 14 touchdowns if things break right, which could place him among the top five backs in fantasy scoring.

However, there are some notable concerns this season. Achane’s rushing efficiency declined in 2024 compared to his stellar rookie year—his yards per carry dropped from a remarkable 7.8 down to about 4.5. Additionally, the Miami Dolphins’ offensive line continues to be a liability, potentially limiting his running lanes and effectiveness between the tackles. Furthermore, Achane recently suffered a calf injury in the preseason, which has kept him out of practice and could hamper his preparation or availability early in the season. While the team appears optimistic about his Week 1 status, his injury history and the nature of calf strains make this something to monitor closely.

The Dolphins’ offensive scheme also factors heavily into Achane’s outlook. Last year’s more horizontal passing attack benefited him, resulting in a high target share; with the departure of tight end Jonnu Smith, Achane could see even more targets and catches. Yet, if Miami’s passing game reinstates more vertical plays to exploit wide receivers like Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle deeper downfield, Achane’s dominant receiving workload may moderate. Tagovailoa’s health and ability to throw downfield will be crucial, as Achane’s peak value is tied closely to Tua’s effectiveness and overall offensive health.

Finally, competition for touches looms as second-year back Jaylen Wright steps into the No. 2 role. Wright’s presence might reduce Achane’s volume inside the tackles but could also benefit Achane by allowing him to focus more on receiving and explosive plays, potentially preserving his efficiency and dynamic playmaking ability. Managers should feel confident in drafting Achane as a high second-round pick given his three-down usage and ceiling, but they must be mindful of the injury risk and potential efficiency concerns when crafting their strategies.
