Jahmyr Gibbs

Detroit Lions

Season Preview

Jahmyr Gibbs enters the 2025 fantasy football season as one of the top running back options available, firmly in the first-round conversation. After a breakout 2024 campaign where he posted elite efficiency—with a yards per carry of 5.6 and a touchdown rate of 6.6%—Gibbs established himself as a high-floor, high-ceiling RB1. Despite the departure of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who played a big role in the Lions’ explosive offense last season, Gibbs is expected to remain the focal point of Detroit’s attack under new OC John Morton and head coach Dan Campbell. His dynamic skill set, blending speed, vision, and pass-catching ability, continues to be a fantasy asset, especially in PPR formats.

Gibbs showcased his value more prominently at the end of last season when David Montgomery was sidelined, averaging 18.7 PPR points over 14 games even with Montgomery sharing the backfield. The Lions’ backfield competition keeps some touches from being fully concentrated on Gibbs, but Montgomery is now 28 and may begin to lose some volume as Gibbs ascends as the clear lead back. The offense is fertile ground for fantasy, ranking at the top in points and yards last year, which should help maintain Gibbs’ fantasy relevance. Key to watch will be how Morton’s play-calling affects scoring opportunities relative to Johnson’s system, with some concern that the offense might take a slight step back in efficiency.

There are some questions about Gibbs’ ability to consistently handle pass protection and performance in tight running situations inside the line, issues that sometimes cap his ceiling. However, his elite speed (running a 4.36 40-yard dash) and excellent receiving skills provide a strong floor and PPR upside. His ability to rack up yards both on the ground and through the air, combined with his occasional touchdown spikes—like the 30-plus point games in Weeks 7 and 18 last year—make him a potential league-winner at the running back position. Fantasy managers should feel confident drafting him early but remain mindful of the evolving backfield dynamics and offensive changes.

Looking ahead to 2025 drafts, the consensus is that Gibbs is a safe bet for a top-five RB finish and a valuable first-round pick, especially in one-QB leagues. The main concerns are tied to the offense adapting to new coaching and Montgomery’s continued role, which could limit touches somewhat. Still, given his statistical baseline, explosive talent, and the Lions' sustained offensive strength, Gibbs holds one of the highest floors and ceilings among running backs this year. Fantasy players seeking a reliable and high-upside RB1 should consider him a cornerstone of their draft strategy for 2025.
