RB

James Cook

Buffalo Bills

Season Preview

James Cook enters the 2025 fantasy football season as the clear lead back for the Buffalo Bills, but with some caution flags. After a breakout 2024 season where he led the league with 16 rushing touchdowns and totaled 18 scores, expectations are tempered this year. Despite that touchdown surge, Cook’s yardage and reception numbers actually dipped compared to prior seasons, and he was on the field for less than half of Buffalo’s offensive snaps. This usage pattern suggests that while he remains a contributor in a high-powered offense, his upside may be limited, especially since his touchdown rate in 2024 was highly unlikely to be sustained.

Cook’s production last year was a big surprise, with touchdown numbers soaring far beyond what his carries and touches would predict. Given Buffalo’s backfield situation—with Josh Allen continuing to be a rushing threat and rookie Ray Davis who also saw significant work—there’s a realistic chance for touchdown regression in 2025. This means Cook could lose some red zone opportunities to those teammates, which would reduce his fantasy ceiling. Still, no new competition has emerged in the Bills backfield, and Cook is expected to start and retain a sizable role, anchoring the Bills’ running game and benefiting from the stable offensive system under head coach Sean McDermott and OC Joe Brady.

From a fantasy perspective, Cook presents as a solid mid-tier RB2 option who offers touchdown upside but limited volume. His snap share and overall role imply that he is more of a complementary piece rather than a featured back carrying a heavy workload. Managers should be cautious not to rely on a repeat of his 18 total touchdowns but can count on steady contribution in a dynamic Bills offense. His efficiency, especially in scoring opportunities inside the 10-yard line, remains a valuable asset, even if overall touchdown totals drop.

In terms of durability and availability, there have been no recent injury reports or concerns related to James Cook entering the 2025 season, so he should be at full strength and ready to perform. His contract situation—he’s in the final year of his rookie deal—has reportedly caused some frustration, but it hasn’t translated into missing training camp or preseason activities. This means fantasy owners can expect him to be the lead back on a team that uses the run effectively, but it’s wise to moderate expectations and prepare for a possible step back in touchdown production compared to his unlikely 2024 peak.
