Joe Mixon

Houston Texans

Season Preview

Joe Mixon enters the 2025 fantasy football season as a talented running back who remains the Houston Texans' primary ball carrier and goal-line option, but his outlook carries significant caution due to ongoing injury concerns. At 29 years old, Mixon showed solid production when healthy in 2024 after being acquired from the Bengals. However, he missed multiple games last season due to an ankle injury and has faced continued foot and ankle complications during the 2025 offseason. These issues have caused him to miss all of OTAs, minicamps, and most of training camp, leaving his availability for Week 1 uncertain.

Despite his injury setbacks, Mixon demonstrated he can still provide valuable fantasy output when on the field, averaging over 72 rushing yards per game in 2024 and finishing as a top-20 PPR running back. He remains a volume-heavy back who is heavily involved in both the rushing and receiving game, though his receptions dipped last year largely because of missed time. If healthy, he could surpass 50 catches and maintain his role as a workhorse, especially with the Texans' offense expected to improve in 2025. His veteran experience and touchdown potential keep him relevant, but his efficiency metrics have declined, and wear and tear might start to limit his upside.

Complicating Mixon's fantasy value is the Texans' addition of rookie Woody Marks and free-agent signing Nick Chubb, who are expected to see usage either as change-of-pace backs or early-down complements. Chubb's presence in particular could reduce Mixon’s workload, especially if Mixon's foot injury persists or he requires a managed snap count. Fantasy analysts place Mixon more in the risky RB2/RB3 tier this year due to this uncertainty and his foot injury status, which could lead to him missing additional game time early in the season. Monitoring his health closely during preseason will be key to gauging how many touches he can handle and how much role share he might lose.

In summary, Joe Mixon remains a talented and potentially productive fantasy asset with a solid floor if he plays significant games in 2025, but his heavy usage history and current foot injury give him a more fragile outlook. If he can get past the foot issues and start the season healthy, Mixon could still offer mid-round value with upside for a top-10 fantasy running back finish. However, should his injury linger or lead to limited early-season availability, his role will undoubtedly be curtailed by Chubb and Marks, making him a high-risk pick who should be approached conservatively in drafts this year.
