Keaton Mitchell enters 2026 in a much better spot for fantasy relevance than he did a year ago, because he’s now with the Los Angeles Chargers after signing a two-year, $9.25 million deal this offseason. That move matters: CBS and other fantasy outlets note that he is expected to have an offensive role on game days, and the Chargers have treated him as a real part of the backfield instead of a pure stash.

The biggest reason to be interested is still Mitchell’s explosiveness. Multiple 2026 previews describe him as a late-round sleeper with big-play upside, and PFF specifically points out that he averaged 5.8 yards per carry in a limited role last year before landing in Los Angeles. If he gets even a modest touch count, his speed gives him a path to usable weeks in best ball and deeper redraft leagues.

There is also some competition to watch. Fantasy analysts have framed Mitchell as a challenger for the RB2 role behind Omarion Hampton, with Kimani Vidal still in the mix as well, so this is not a clear lead-back path. That keeps Mitchell in the flex- and handcuff-type bucket for now, rather than someone to draft as a steady weekly starter.

The injury concern is the main reason for caution, but the encouraging part is that the lingering knee issues from his ACL recovery are no longer the same red flag they were earlier in his career. The safest fantasy plan is to treat Mitchell as a high-upside late pick: valuable if the Chargers give him meaningful snaps, but still best viewed as a volatile depth piece unless camp usage starts trending sharply upward.
