Kenneth Gainwell

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Season Preview

Kenneth Gainwell enters the 2026 fantasy season with real PPR appeal after moving to Tampa Bay, where he signed a two-year, $14 million deal and projects as the team’s primary passing-down back behind Bucky Irving. After his 2025 breakout in Pittsburgh, where he produced 73 catches for 486 yards and three receiving touchdowns on 85 targets, Gainwell looks like a player whose role could translate well in a Buccaneers offense that has shown a willingness to funnel work to running backs through the air.

The biggest reason to like Gainwell is that his fantasy value is built on receptions, not touchdown volatility. He was one of the league’s better receiving backs last season, and multiple preseason previews expect Tampa Bay to use him in a similar way to the role Rachaad White vacated, with Gainwell handling most of the passing-down snaps while Irving leads the rushing work. That gives Gainwell a stable weekly floor in PPR and half-PPR formats, even if his rushing volume stays modest.

The main limitation is that his path to a true three-down workload still looks narrow. Gainwell has never consistently been asked to carry a heavy early-down load, and scouting of his Tampa Bay fit suggests his ceiling is capped unless Irving misses time; even then, the likely outcome is more of a committee role than a full featured-back takeover. Projection models and fantasy analysts still see him as more of a strong complementary piece than a locked-in every-week starter, though some are willing to put him in the RB2 conversation if his usage spikes.

For 2026 drafts, Gainwell is the kind of player you target as a high-upside bench piece or flex option in PPR leagues, especially if your roster can absorb some week-to-week variability. His new team, his proven receiving production, and the Buccaneers’ backfield structure all point to a useful fantasy season, but he is still more attractive for catches than for raw rushing volume or touchdown upside.
