Season Preview

Kirk Cousins heads into 2026 in a very different fantasy situation than he had a year ago. Atlanta released him in March, and he quickly landed with the Las Vegas Raiders, where he is now on the roster heading into the season. That move matters a lot for fantasy because it shifts him from a messy Falcons quarterback room into a clearer role in Las Vegas, even if the team appears to view him more as a veteran bridge than a long-term centerpiece.

The biggest thing working against Cousins is playing time uncertainty. Reports out of Las Vegas indicate the Raiders signed him with the understanding that he will help stabilize the position while top draft pick Fernando Mendoza develops, which puts Cousins at risk of eventually sliding into a backup or short-term bridge role rather than holding the job all year. That makes him a much shakier fantasy QB2 than a year ago, because his value now depends on whether he keeps the starting job and how quickly the Raiders want to turn the offense over.

Health is still worth monitoring, but the good news is that Cousins is entering 2026 healthy after the Achilles injury that ended his 2023 season. There have also been no recent reports of a new major injury affecting his current season outlook, so the main concern is opportunity rather than recovery. At this stage of his career, that is still a meaningful positive, because a healthy Cousins can usually provide steady passing numbers if he gets enough volume.

For fantasy managers, Cousins is best viewed as a late-round depth quarterback or waiver-wire streamer, not a locked-in starter. His appeal is tied to matchup-based value and the possibility that Las Vegas gives him a full season of snaps, but the Raiders’ long-term plan suggests the floor is lower than the name value implies. If you want a safe, boring QB2 with some weekly starting upside in deeper leagues, Cousins can still fit that mold; in standard redraft leagues, he is more of a backup plan than someone to build around.
