Season Preview

Kyle Monangai enters the 2026 season as a Bears running back with real fantasy appeal, but his immediate outlook has been clouded by a knee injury in training camp. Chicago head coach Ben Johnson called him “week-to-week” after Monangai hyperextended his right knee, and reporting suggests he could miss multiple weeks, putting his Week 1 availability in serious doubt.

When healthy, Monangai looks like a useful fantasy piece because he profiles as more than just a stash. FantasyPros currently labels him a solid RB3/flex option with high-end handcuff appeal, which fits a player who could earn usable touches in Chicago’s backfield if he gets back on the field quickly. He also carried fantasy buzz before the injury because the workload path was at least somewhat open, and some analysts were projecting standalone value in the right matchup environment.

The biggest thing to watch is how much time he actually misses and whether the knee issue lingers into the regular season. Early reports indicated the knee was structurally sound, which is encouraging, but the later MRI-based update still pointed to a multi-week absence, so this is not a no-brainer “nothing to see here” situation. For fantasy managers, that means Monangai should be viewed as a short-term risk rather than a locked-in contributor until he is back at full practice.

Bottom line: Monangai is still worth rostering in deeper leagues because his upside as a Bears back has not disappeared, but his 2026 value takes a hit if he opens the year sidelined. If he returns quickly, he can still settle into RB3 or flex territory with handcuff upside; if the recovery drags, he becomes more of a stash than an early-season starter.
