Michael Penix Jr. enters the 2026 fantasy season as a high-upside, high-variance quarterback, but the biggest storyline is his health. He is still working back from a torn left ACL suffered in November 2025, has been limited to individual work and 7-on-7s in camp, and has not yet been cleared for full 11-on-11 action.

That injury is the main reason his early-season outlook is shaky. Atlanta has already listed him as an injured player on its preseason depth chart, and he has been ruled out for the preseason opener while he continues to progress toward full contact. Reports from camp say the team remains optimistic he can get back into full participation, but the timing is still uncertain.

From a fantasy perspective, that pushes Penix into a volatile range. He is still worth monitoring because his arm talent and aggressive style can create spike weeks, but current industry outlooks have him well outside the must-draft tier in standard leagues, with value mainly in superflex formats or as a late-round quarterback stash.

If Penix does get fully cleared and keep the starting job, the ceiling is still interesting because Atlanta is expected to build around his passing ability rather than ask him to carry the offense on the ground. For now, though, the safer fantasy read is that he’s a speculative QB2/QB3 who comes with injury risk, uncertain early availability, and enough upside to justify a bench spot only if the price is right.
