The case for Johnston starts with his role and production trend. After a rocky rookie year, he took clear steps forward in 2024 and again in 2025, finishing 2025 with 51 catches, 735 yards, and 8 touchdowns in 14 regular-season starts. FantasyPros notes that he posted career-best fantasy production in 2025 while remaining a downfield and red-zone weapon, and CBS Sports says he has already moved from “bust” territory into a legitimate sleeper who could have a career year in 2026.

The upside is real because his skill set fits a big-play fantasy profile. Fantasy Life’s offseason analysis pointed to strong underlying usage in 2025, including a 36.2% air-yard share and 2.55 yards per route run, while also noting that a hamstring injury and offensive-line issues may have limited him at times. NBC Sports also highlighted that Johnston missed two games due to injury last season, so his final numbers may have understated what he could have done over a full healthy year.

For 2026, Johnston looks like a strong WR3/FLEX target with weekly spike-week upside, especially in drafts where his price remains in the WR4 range. The main risk is the same as it has always been: volatility. He is still a deep-threat, big-play receiver, so he may frustrate managers in quieter weeks, but the combination of his role, improving efficiency, and continued connection with Justin Herbert makes him one of the more appealing mid-round fantasy bets at wide receiver.
