Season Preview

T.J. Hockenson enters the 2026 fantasy season as a familiar name with a less familiar price tag: still useful, but no longer an automatic elite tight end. Minnesota restructured his contract this week, which strongly signals he remains part of the Vikings’ plans for 2026, and that stability matters for fantasy drafters looking for volume at a thin position. After missing the final two games of 2025 with a shoulder injury, he finished the year with 51 catches for 438 yards and three touchdowns in 15 games, a stat line that reflects both his upside and the drop-off from his pre-injury peak.

The big storyline is health. Hockenson has already dealt with major knee rehab since the torn ACL and MCL that derailed his 2023 season, and although he returned in 2024 and played through 2025, the combination of recovery and a late-year shoulder issue has kept his ceiling in check. That makes him a safer bet for steady usage than for a massive breakout, especially if Minnesota continues to spread the ball around rather than funnel targets heavily to one tight end.

From a fantasy standpoint, Hockenson still profiles as a strong TE1 option, but more in the mid-tier range than in the locked-in elite tier he occupied earlier in his career. Recent 2026 outlooks expect him to provide solid touchdown potential and dependable reception volume, but not necessarily the yardage spike needed to finish as a top-three tight end. In full PPR formats, his weekly floor remains appealing because tight end is such a shallow position, yet his draft value should reflect some lingering injury risk and a more modest target ceiling.

The best way to draft Hockenson in 2026 is as a reliable starter with upside, not as a player to build the position around. If you wait on tight end, he can be a very reasonable target who offers a stable role in Minnesota’s offense and enough red-zone involvement to matter. If you pay for him as if he were fully back to his pre-injury form, though, you may be expecting more than the current version is likely to deliver.
