Kansas City Chiefs
AFC West | Bye Week: 10
Season Preview
The Kansas City Chiefs enter the 2025 NFL season with some key challenges and opportunities, especially on offense. Patrick Mahomes remains the centerpiece, looking to build on an excellent training camp, and if his wide receivers can stay healthy, he could have a memorable year. However, Rashee Rice, the team's top wide receiver, will only be available for the first four games due to a potential midseason suspension. This situation puts pressure on emerging talents like Xavier Worthy to step up and fill the void left by both Rice’s absence and star tight end Travis Kelce’s noticeable regression. Worthy is gaining confidence as a target and could prove to be a valuable fantasy asset in the process.
On the other hand, the Chiefs' defense faces significant hurdles after losing major players such as Justin Reid, Tershawn Wharton, Derrick Nnadi, L'Jarius Sneed, and Willie Gay Jr. While the team still has strong defensive tackle Chris Jones anchoring the line, these departures suggest the defense may not sustain the high-level performances seen in previous seasons. General manager Brett Veach and the staff are expected to remain active on the waiver wire, especially looking for depth on defensive tackle, linebacker, and running back due to injuries to key pass rushers Felix Anudike-Uzomah and Janarius Robinson. The team's defense is likely to be less dominant, making it imperative for Mahomes and the offense to carry the load this year.
The Chiefs’ offensive line also draws considerable attention, with only Creed Humphrey and Trey Smith commanding confidence so far. This group's ability to protect Mahomes will be crucial, given past struggles in big games like the Super Bowl. A shaky offensive line could limit Mahomes’ effectiveness, especially facing aggressive pass rushes around the league. That said, the Chiefs have focused on maintaining solidity here and might surprise if their line gels well early in the season. Meanwhile, the running backs room is a mix of Isiah Pacheco, Brashard Smith, and Elijah Mitchell, who could see a healthy workload in situations when the passing game faces challenges.
A big offseason loss was wide receiver Skyy Moore, who the Chiefs traded to the San Francisco 49ers. This trade leaves a gap in the receiving corps but also slightly shifts expectations onto other targets like JuJu Smith-Schuster and Hollywood Brown to contribute more consistently. The 2025 season opener in São Paulo against the Chargers will be a significant test to see how well the revamped offense performs under pressure. Overall, the Chiefs have the talent to be dangerous, but uncertainty around the defense, offensive line, and wide receiver availability will make this a season of adaptation and opportunity for Kansas City.
